In many art classes at IU, we can feel ourselves being shaped into workers. Art is no longer for its own sake; we are being taught by a capitalist university to succeed in a capitalist society. We are being conditioned to sell ourselves in disgusting ways. The things we did because we loved them have been reduced to yet more chores, more joyless crap we can’t wait to finish, more projects in a sea of meaningless assignments.
Art, of all things, should be for everyone. Art is a valuable mode of self-expression amid a desert of repression. The crushing weight of capitalism limits the extent to which our art, and our selves, can soar. In this reclaimed space, we are proposing a new type of art: freedom. For everyone - students, community members, teachers, etc.
The university portrays itself as a vehicle for student expression and power - but only through their pre-approved, dead-end channels. In taking this space, in this new art, we seek to contest that and assert that we ourselves have power - specifically, the power to determine the content of spaces the university purports to be ours.
However, the potential for this space should not be limited to the arts. As we invite others into this space, so too do we invite their ideas, their desires, their schemes. We would like to see a space for student art, information dissemination, forums free schools - a place to meet comrades, to talk. We envision this space becoming a center for organizing attacks against the austerity the university imposes on us.
In taking this auditorium, we are saying: this space is ours, and has always been ours. So, too, is it your space. As others being to embark on this experiment with us, we ask: What do you want?
